René van der Gijp has been named the funniest Dutch celebrity by readers of the magazine. According to the winner and former football player the jokes in football talk show Veronica Inside are often vulgar, usually quite inappropriate and "on the edge of decency".
People often criticize "football canteen humour", but the analyst is not bothered. In conversation with Veronica Magazine, he says: "Sometimes I really think they make it bigger than it is." The analyst of Veronica Inside thus beat professional comedians such as André van Duin and Jochem Myjer, who were second and third respectively.
Gijp thinks that he owes his success mainly to his TV colleagues Wilfred Genee and Johan Derksen. As regular TV commentators, we sometimes go too far. "Then I will say something about gays I should not have done. But accidentally saying something like that is inherent to the program we make. The Minister of Emancipation Affairs is complaining about us.... I really don't understand why the Minister is so concerned.”
Grijp is not often sorry about his jokes. But when he is, it is often because the former footballer is misunderstood or is taken too seriously. "What I especially do not understand is that the gays on TV are all embraced. From Carlo Boszhard and Paul de Leeuw to Martien Meiland. So, I don't see the problem. I really don't believe the Netherlands is as intolerant as some want us to believe.”
"When I joke about gays, Peter van der Vorst will immediately tell me a story about what he experienced as a twelve-year-old. That is unfortunate, but has nothing to do with my sense of humour. I understand it is hard to come out to your parents, but look at someone like referee John Blankenstein (1949-2006). He was also gay, and whether they were an Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord supporter, everyone wanted him as referee. "
Veronica Magazine had compiled a shortlist of more than forty men and women, known from TV, film and theatre. After René, André and Jochem (2nd and 3rd), comedian Ronald Goedemondt finished in fourth place. Chantal Janzen is the first woman in fifth place.
