Again this year, a series of sparkling shows from “Travestiecabaret Amsterdam" are scheduled. The ingredients are the same, with live songs, self-written or adapted, cabaret-like sketches, and variété. Topped with glitter and glamour. Preferably with a wink and a hint of oh-la-la... Organizer Koos van den Berg, also known as Coco Coquette, explains.
Out of the Closet
“In our seventh season we really pull out all the stops! Again, we will be guests at Casa Rosso in Amsterdam’s red-light district. This theatre is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year. The intimate theatre with movable stage and hundreds of light positions seems to have been created especially for us. Yet many people from Amsterdam have never been there, they say! They now have a great excuse! Those Sundays in the winter months can be quite horrific. No sun, grey skies, and nothing but sadness and gloom,” the organizer sighs.
“That is why on a Sunday, we are organizing a pleasant afternoon full of ‘drag acts with a wink’ and ‘irresponsible entertainment.’ Every week, we have a selection of top and bottom artists live on stage. And this stage as such is an experience.” It will bring color to your Sunday afternoon!
Old Hit Acts
“Veterans such as Molly Strychnine, Victoria False and Dora Royale will give an acte de présence for their growing and loyal fans. Charité la Bustier will ‘show’ her talents on December 15 and sing her heart out, without holding back with her deliciously tacky and self-written lyrics.
And what about Taylor Made, who amazes the audience with spectacular aerial acrobatics and pole dancing? For a healthy dose of testosterone, Mario Magic and the Poppers leave their dresses in the closet and show off their unique skills.”
Lyricist Gavin Reijnders
Gavin Reijnders is the youngest addition to the Travestiecabaret with his twenty-one years. Gavin sings and talks about the difficult things that should be easy and the simple things that actually prove to be quite difficult. “I saw him discuss his homosexuality in a playful suit full of bravado, charming the predominantly straight audience. I was sold immediately. With his ukulele he reminds me of a young Brigitte Kaandorp, the Dutch comedian.”
Gavin Reijnders made it to the final of the Leids Cabaret Festival 2019. “Many people can get lost in his beautiful songs with even better lyrics. Disarming and completely in his element, he ascends the stage,” the jury said. “His songs are very strong; whether it is his ‘Ode to the Road Worker’ or ‘Boy with swag.’” According to the jury, Reijnders was completely in his element with the funny “Romance is for the Straight.” It reminded the jury of “Sorry dat ik besta” by famous Dutch author and song writer Annie M.G. Schmidt in the musical “Foxtrot. Gavin Reijnders performs on December 8, 22 and 29.
Jazz Diva Hella Holland
“I am extremely happy that Hella Holland is here for the first time this year. I have known her since the illustrious Club Chique nights and the Gay Dating shows from 1991. She is still performing and her voice has only become more beautiful and more weathered.”
Hella Holland brings musical cabaret in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald, and Dutch comedy duo Van Kooten en De Bie. Vocal jazz, with wild pop excursions and literary pretensions. The singer’s performances are relaxed and hilarious at the same time. Hella was created in the early 1990s under the direction of Dutch actress Hetty Blok.
The conservatory-trained, vulnerable diva of an indefinite age, likes to enforce an intimate atmosphere. She performs jazz and pop in a virtuoso manner in her own Dutch-language arrangement; from Peggy Lee to Verdi, from Abba to The Who. In between, she recites poems or chats about everything that concerns her. Hella is not about idle feelings, but about true art. Perhaps that is why the Holland Festival is named after her. Hella can be seen on December 8, 22, 26 and 29.
In conclusion Koos says: “With these new stars, our program remains innovative and varied. It is important that we have fun and don’t take ourselves too seriously. Our having fun in the dressing room also benefits the show. This way, we can give our visitors a great Sunday afternoon out!”
