Whistle-blower Ms Shuping Wang died at the age of 59. In the 1990s, she raised the alarm about the blazing fast spread of Hepatitis C and HIV in China.

Shuping Wang (r)
This doctor may have saved tens of thousands of lives. In 1991, she worked at a blood bank in the Chinese province of Henan, when she noticed that the way the blood was taken was not according to protocol. For example, blood from various donors was put in one batch, and Hepatitis C was not tested beforehand.

At that time, poor Chinese farmers stood in line to give blood to earn a bit extra. Wang wanted to protect the poor and approached her supervisor, but was dismissed with the line that change cost too much money. She did not leave it at that and reported it to the Chinese Ministry of Health.

She was let go, but from that moment on, donors were tested for the disease. In 1995, she discovered a new blood scandal, this time it about HIV. She herself paid for taking samples of 400 donors, of which 13% turned out to be HIV positive. She reported this to the authorities, but this time not only lost her job, but also her husband.

After various threats, Wang no longer felt safe in her home country and fled to the United States in 2001. According to her current husband, she died of a heart attack during a walk in Salt Lake City.
