The new year has finally officially started. On October 1, we began as the new board of A.S.V.Gay and this tenth board is now ready to take up its duties. We have officially waved goodbye to the ninth board of A.S.V.Gay at our “General meeting exchange,” which is the general meeting where members traditionally change our board.
Every year, this is accompanied by emotional speeches and many shed tears; both tears of happiness and tears of sorrow. The former board must say goodbye to managing the association, and the new board may finally perform its duties.
Traditionally, the next big event on the calendar is the “Queer Hazing Weekend,” a weekend in the Dutch province of Drenthe with this year’s new members. The weekend has always been a great success, which, naturally, was also the case this year. That weekend, many games were played in order to get to know each other better. There was a lot of dancing and, of course, a lot of beer was drunk, because we are a student’s union. Both cosy evenings ran late in the wee small hours!
October also saw our Committee Market, organized every year at the SoHo. This market shows our members which committees are installed for the coming year. The committees organize events, trips or symposia for the union. We have a total of eighteen committees this year, and we expect to “man” them with our active members, as it is voluntary. We have a Pride Committee, for instance, which organizes the Pride boat for that year.
We have a Party Committee that organizes all our parties. This year, a new committee has also been added, namely the Fresher Committee, a committee by and for first-year members. With these wonderful committees we will try to make it a great year full of special activities!
Every year, we honor our neighbors with an “Oktoberfest.” Many members came in Lederhosen and Dirndls for beer and listening to German schlagers, from “99 Luftballons” to “Ich Bin Wie Du”! Besides the Oktoberfest, we also organized the Troika social. For our student’s union, the Troika practically represent the blood running through our veins, because it is our signature shot. At the Troika social, contests were held who could make a cocktail the quickest, and there was Troika merchandise available.
We also have some nice things planned for November, namely an evening about discrimination that we are going to set up with various organizations, in order to make our members more aware of what they can do if they are discriminated against. Of course, we will also organize some fun parties and get-togethers.
Interested in joining us for a drink? Drop by on one of our socials on Wednesday night. Every week from 21:00 onwards, we will be at the Amstel54 bar, so be welcome!
