The new year of A.S.V.Gay will not just be a new year, but our tenth, which means that we will be celebrating our second lustre!
The new academic year has begun, which also means a changing of the board. Board Nine has finished its year with a loud goodbye during Pride. Now, we will take over the baton; the tenth board of A.S.V.Gay, with six very different people. Let’s start with our chairman, Derk, overseeing everything from above (literally, because he is very tall). Rob, our vice-president, a silent force who deals with everything. Melissa, our secretary, who keeps an eye on everything and will certainly record everything, so watch what you’re saying. Max, our internal commissioner and word play king, you have to knock on his door for everything that takes place in the union. Jeroen, our external commissioner, unbelievably enthusiastic and energetic, he knows exactly what is going on outside A.S.V.Gay. And last but not least, myself, Julia. I’m the treasurer, so for money, I am the one to go for.
With summer over and autumn on its way, this new board year has started. In June we were approved as the new board. Since that time, we have been busy with training, preparing our policy plan and getting A.S.V.Gay ready for the student introduction period (“introductieweek”) of the universities and higher vocational schools. Late August, we were all present at the student’s union introductory meetings of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit.
Our first activity as a board was the opening party at the SoHo, on August 28. This was also the kick-off party for our anniversary. The first board of A.S.V.Gay, who founded the association in 2010, was also present there. All four made a speech looking back on the founding of the union and how far we have come in ten years. It was a great party, which made us all incredibly enthusiastic about actually starting the year.
Each year, we organize all kinds of introductory activities. We call this week the “kweekweek.” I myself participated in them last year. I was just new to A.S.V.Gay, but was immediately welcomed by my very nice and new “family.” I now had three new “mothers,” what more could a girl want? The families present during that A.S.V.Gay introductory “kweekweek” are there to make it easier for people to get to know the union. After all, old members know the association well and can make sure new members feel right at home.
To end this introduction period, we have a newbie weekend, the “ontrozingsweekend” on October 11, 12 and 13. This is a weekend for new members, in which they will participate in all kinds of fun activities to get to know each other. One of the best ways to start your life at A.S.V.Gay. Mind you, none of it is obligatory!
In doubt as to whether you would like to join? Drop by on one of our social get-togethers on Wednesday night. Every week we are at the Amstel54 bar from 21.00 onwards, so feel welcome to drop by!
