SeniorPride presents “Naar vriendschap zulk een mateloos verlangen” (Such an immense longing for friendship), a concert in which troubadours will perform new songs in Dutch. As each generation is looking for friendship, love, intimacy, affection and community, the SeniorPride Concert 2019 strives to reflect this community in order to experience and celebrate friendship.
On Thursday, August 1, at one of Amsterdam’s most enchanting squares, the Nieuwmarkt, a special concert for Pink Seniors, local residents and anyone looking for friendship will take place. A concert where different generations can come together with the songs performed by Dutch artists, and where people can celebrate. The concert’s elements are connected through choreographies by Raoulala and the Dumas Dancers, as well as Mario Magic, who will host the concert.
The Netherlands have a rich history of Dutch-language songs in many genres. Songs that have fascinated many generations and have brought the Dutch together. Nostalgia and the future come together on this evening, and singing together strengthens the ties that we as a pink community are looking and longing for. SeniorPride is now the largest Amsterdam Pride reunion.
The internationally renowned DJ Bo Monde, who was elected Miss Gay Holland in 2017, will welcome the audience during the Bienvenue Festival, and Merel Moistra will perform the opening song of Senior Pride. Merel Moistra is a comedian and eclectic entertainer, and strives only for the best. Mieke Stemerdink, the former front woman of the highly successful rock-and-roll band De Gigantjes in the 1980s and 1990s, will sing songs from her new CD. She will perform a specially chosen song at the request of the organization, always looking for a smile and a tear.
With his new theater program “O ja!,” Jan Rot takes us back to the 1990s and will provide the audience with a taste of this decade, in addition to his earlier well-known songs. Mariska van Kolck and Jordy van Loon gives us a preview of the musical “Haal het doek maar op, van Appelscha tot Zierikzee.” A musical about artists on tour, full of Dutch classics. A compelling, hilarious and romantic story about false dreams, forbidden relationships, backstage quarrels, endless bus trips and top or flop. The duo The Poppers loves cheerfulness, and Hairy and Barey Popper will close the first part of the program.
After the break, former Eurovision Song Contest winner Lenny Kuhr will perform with her band. Lenny Kuhr has been a true troubadour for fifty years now, and is still going strong. In that very same year, the Stonewall riots took place in New York. Worldwide, these riots have become the vanguard in the fight for equal rights. After the umpteenth police raid of the Stonewall Inn, the majority decided to fight back.
Beat poet Allen Ginsberg, who lived in Greenwich Village, said after seeing the rioters: “The guys lost that wounded look that fags had ten years ago.” One year later in commemoration of these riots, the world’s first ever Pride Parade was organized. With Lenny Kuhr, whose whole life is dedicated to song, SeniorPride commemorates how suffering can lead to fighting for one’s rights. Her performances are intimate, with deeply felt chansons. During the SeniorPride Concert 2019 she will also perform songs from her new CD.
Ria Valk, who started her career in Amsterdam more than sixty years ago, is a Dutch singer, former television host and actress who has an unbelievable number of hits to her name. In 2018, Ria Valk was a guest artist during the De Toppers concert, and she will perform at SeniorPride on Thursday, August 1. Meanwhile, girl group BB Bootleg has become the regular sparkling and swinging conclusion to the SeniorPride program.
These Andrew Sisters with “balls” give old songs from the 1940s to the 1980s a new interpretation. DJ Ronnie Retro has been the SeniorPride’s resident DJ from the start, and will play dance music during the final hour. Every year, SeniorPride ends with a full dance floor, so don’t miss the opportunity to hit the dance floor.
This year once again, The Queen’s Head on the Zeedijk will provide refreshments with the proceeds going to the Gray Pride Foundation. These proceeds finance events for pink seniors. The concert is free of charge and is sponsored by a large number of companies, without whose sponsorship it would not be possible to organize the event.
Entry to the Bienvenue Festival is from 18:00 and the event itself will take place from 19:00-23:00, with a break from 20:00 to 20:30. The front rows are reserved for people with mobility problems, but it is advisable to be on time. Drag Queen Amy Huiswijn and her volunteers will once again invite the residents of De Flesseman care centre, which is located on the Nieuwmarkt, to be present at the concert and take care of all their needs.
