At A.S.V.Gay we are now in Summer Mode, and our members are finally free of all the stress of deadlines and resits. To top it all, the Pride Week is almost there! For many of us perhaps the most beautiful week of the year, but more about that later. The Pride Week is traditionally the end of the board year, so a retrospective seems appropriate here.
We have been busy all year and organized a lot of wonderful activities. Last month was no exception. Of course, we had a lot of drinks on Wednesday nights, with the final drink of this board year in the “Disney” theme. We braved the oak processionary caterpillar at the Fun Forest in the Amsterdamse Bos, and together with our current affairs committee we discussed the importance of queer safe spaces.
We also had a drink with (almost) all of the former board members of our association to give a toast to how far the association has come since its foundation. Indeed, a lot of very different events! To end the year with a bang, we finally went on a magical weekend away with all our sister associations: the annual Sister’s Weekend! This year’s theme was “Gayrry Potter,” and you know what they say: “What happens at Hogwarts, stays at Hogwarts...”
And now from retrospection to a glimpse into the near future. As mentioned earlier, it is almost time for Pride. The rainbow flags can already be seen everywhere in the city. Preparations are also in full swing at A.S.V.Gay as we have a busy schedule ahead!
On Saturday afternoon, July 27, we can be found at Pride Park, so come by and check out our stand!
After this, our symposium is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30. This year, it will take place in the A’DAM Tower, and has the theme “Activism is Timeless.” It promises to be a great day with lots of inspiring speakers and a workshop, so drop by if you have the time!
Thursday, August 1 is an excellent day for the party animals among us - our party committee will then organize the annual Pride party! This year under the heading of #BreakDowntheNorms we will get our worst outfit out of the closet for this Bad Taste Party at the Heilige Zeug, Warmoesstraat 121, Amsterdam!
It is bitter-sweet, but at the end of this fantastic week it will be time for us to pass on the baton to the next board, our second lustrum board! The coming months will be dominated by on-boarding, transferring and preparing these six top candidates for the fantastic year that awaits them.
But first, we are going to enjoy Pride Amsterdam. I will celebrate with my five favorite fellow members of the board alongside all the people in Amsterdam that we are who we are! Happy Pride:)
