Emancipation minister Ingrid van Engelshoven has presented the Jos Brink Awards for LGBTI emancipation in the Haarlem playhouse. Jos Brink (1942-2007) was a famous gay producer, vicar, comedian, TV personality and author.
The Jos Brink Lifetime Achievement Award 2019 went to pioneer activist and former politician Joke Swiebel, whereas the Jos Brink Innovation Award 2019 went to activist Bowi Jong.
The LGBTI emancipation fight by politician and activist Joke Swiebel began in the second half of the 1960s when she campaigned for the rights of young people. She was co-organizer of the demonstration (on January 21, 1969) against the discriminatory Article 248bis of the Dutch Penal Code.
This demonstration - the first gay demonstration in Europe - is seen as the beginning of the modern Dutch LGBTI movement. In her role as COC Director and Member of the European Parliament, she continued her fight for equal rights. For her efforts for the emancipation of LGBTI people, the Bob Angelo Medal was awarded in 2007 by the COC.
Bowi Jong has quickly become a role model that has brought the issue of the gay-unfriendly world of football to the attention of a wider audience. With his letter to the Royal Dutch Football Association KNVB and the football clubs, he argued for a more inclusive football world. Jong is also an educator on LGBTI acceptance at schools.
The jury consisted of chairman Peter van der Vorst (presenter and Director at RTL The Netherlands), YouTube celebrity Rutger Vink, top model Loiza Lamers, Saskia Keuzenkamp (Director knowledge and innovation at Movisie) and Souad Boumedien (Pride ambassador Amsterdam, chairman of the Moroccan network of the police and Roze in Blauw).
