We can’t ignore it any more: the theme of the Amsterdam Canal Parade is, of course, “Remember the Past, Create the Future.” We are extremely pleased with this theme at A.S.V.Gay, as it ties in extremely well with what we actually do as a student’s union.
To have a voice in the LGBTQ+ community as students is, of course, very cool. Additionally, we try to build a bridge between “normal” student life, LGBTQ+ youth, as well as professional and senior LGBTQ+ people.
A lot has happened at A.S.V.Gay. Our successful introduction period as well as the introduction weekend for new members was in the “Cops & Robbers” theme. It is great to see how the new members of the February batch have settled in. This month, we also celebrated our ninth anniversary with a grand gala, and our members at the General Members’ Meeting gave a lot of input with which the board can set up many new events for another six months.
There are a lot of things in store for us in April. On Friday, April 5th, our party committee will organize the second “Sensation Pink” event. This public event not only wants members to have a good time, but also presents them with an opportunity to expand their LGBTQ+ network in Amsterdam.
The party is open to the public, so please feel free to join us! You can find the details on our Facebook page (/asvgay).
We ourselves, and all LGBTQ+ youth younger than us, are the ones who will create the future. That is why we are also busy engaging with the generation that will follow in our footsteps. On April 7th, the first meeting between Young&Out and A.S.V.Gay will take place. Hopefully this will be the basis for good contact between these organizations, as A.S.V.Gay wants to welcome those who move on to university or higher professional education from secondary school.
And as always, there will be fun and socially relevant activities on the agenda. On April 18th, we are organizing a beer tap course in cooperation with DOEN catering. This catering company we work with, organizes twice a year a beer tap course for us, in order for us to learn the finer points of serving our favorite drink!
And that is just as well, as on King’s Day and on Liberation Day we will run another bar shift at the Homomonument. This way, these events are not only a bit more fun, but also provide us with an opportunity to give something back to the community. It remains incredibly important that we, as a younger generation, continue to remember and celebrate the past, as well as the struggle of LGBTQ people for their rights.
Soon, the themes of the boats of the Canal Parade will be announced. With all the activities we can look back on by then, I am confident that A.S.V.Gay will fit perfectly into the theme of the Canal Parade. We, like no other, are busy with present, past and future, and do our utmost to make our contribution.
