January was the month of New Year’s resolutions and reflection. Let’s drink less, have fewer hangovers, and spend less money. Less than two days into the New Year, and all of these good intentions are out of the window. Let’s try again next year. But which intentions remain? More parties, more excitement, more fun people to meet! YES.
2019 was barely a week old, and we were on the bus to the beautiful city of Cologne. Thanks to our travel committee, we walked around a lot, made kiosks run out of their beer stock completely, painted the Schaafenstraße red in a pub crawl, had a near-death experience in an elevator, only to finally climb back on the bus back to Amsterdam with a throbbing headache.
As the board of the greatest student association of the world, you also have to visit your sister student union’s* from time to time! A.S.V.Gay was invited to the Exaltio gala in Enschede. Many toasts were made, and the dance floor certainly saw some wear- and-tear moves, of course dressed in a great tux.
In February, our plan for a boat during the Canal Parade was sent out, and at the time of publication of this article, we will know if we get the green light to sail in the Pride with a fantastic boat coming summer! We will be present there anyway, on or alongside the canal, but of course a view from the boat itself would be nicer. [green light's there, ed.]
In February, great things were in store for us besides a drink at a fellow student’s union in Enschede, such as a General Members’ Meeting (ALV) and a Valentine’s party, where everyone could give their secret (or less secret) lover a rose with a sweet message. In February, A.S.V.Gay will also celebrate its ninth anniversary. Since the founding year 2010, its anniversary is celebrated every year with a gala on February 23. This year, the party committee also organized a ballroom course, so everyone can practice their moves!
February also was the start of a new introductory period. We have organized get-togethers on February 13, 20 and 27, and on March 6. On these dates, everyone gets the discount that normally only applies to members, with beer, soft drinks and wine at only 1.50. People who join during this period can immediately participate in the “Kweekweek” (the introduction period in which you get to know new and old members) and the “Ontrozingsweekend,” in which we take a weekend off with both new and old members.
So, if you are a student (or almost, or recently graduated) and if you think it would be great to become a member of the most fun and gayest student’s union in Amsterdam, drop by at one of our get-togethers! Even if you have just missed the introductory period, you are of course always welcome to drop by: every Wednesday at Amstel54 we have drinks from 21:00 to late. We work with a system of “drink buddies,” who take you to the first drink if you don’t like to come alone! Mail to email@example.com for this!
I can’t wait for the second part of the year!
* Sisters are GLBTQ+ student unions in other cities, of which there are a total of six in the Netherlands.
