You’re a tourist trudging around in the rain looking for that elusive Monday night sparkle. You scored at the weekend and don’t want it to end. Or you just love cocktails – whatever day it is. Well, you’re in luck.
Getto decided to open their doors on the first day of the week with a brand new concept – “Happy Mondays.” You can sip on a “Horny Maxima,” a “Flying Dutchman,” or signature potion “Getto Blaster” – without worrying about the bill. From the first shake (16:00) to the last drop downed (23:00), all cocktails will be at “happy” prices. You can also share some bites with your spanking new lover. Or catch up with friends over dinner: the dumbwaiter will be whizzing up hearty fare from the kitchen between 17:00-21:30. There really is no better refuge on the city’s quietest night.
For the rest of the week too, you can warm your cockles in Getto’s “gezellig” winter wonderland.
Wednesday is “Burger Queen’s Night” when burgers – with a side of “homo fries” – are reduced in price. Each is named in homage to one of Amsterdam’s hard-working drag queens. The latest to make the bun? Pukkie Snuggles, winner of the 2018 Amsterdam Drag Olympics. Vegetarian? Tuck into Coco Coquette.
Thursdays have welcomed the seasonal return of the “Getto Glam Variety Show.” This legendary evening of live singing, interpretive dance and napkin tossing (cue: “Love is in the Air”) is hosted alternately by the “grand dame of drag” Victoria False and the inimitable and ubiquitous Erin Amazia Tasmania.
Also worth a special mention is “Getto meets Sappho,” monthly on Sundays. Mischievous bartending duo Maaike and Nina have drawn on the vibe of the now-defunct Sappho bar to create a cool space where the lesbian and queer community can mix and, natch, match.
And last but never least, you can visit Elvis – any day of the week. The famous snowy-white cat, who has witnessed the goings-on at Warmoesstraat 52 for almost two decades, is nearly as old as the Getto itself. Twenty-two and a half years and counting.
