The Dutch Minister for Health, Bruno Bruins, wants to investigate if blood donations by homosexuals should be made easier. This was his answer to a question by one of the opposition parties in the Dutch Lower House. He said that in the future, it may be become easier for homosexuals to make blood and tissue donations.
Bruins first wants to see how things go in Denmark, where they wants to make it simpler for homosexuals to donate blood. At the moment in the Netherlands, homosexuals can only donate blood if they have refrained from sexual activity for more than a year, in the assumption that they are more susceptible to sexually transmittable diseases. Denmark is reducing this period to four months. For homosexuals in a monogamous relationship there are no longer any restrictions.
If this new system in Denmark is successful, and is also approved by the Council of Europe, then Bruins will consider relaxing the rules in the Netherlands.
Bruins made this commitment during a debate on the new donor system. In July 2020, anyone who hasn’t registered with the new donor register system will automatically be registered in the category ‘no objection’.
