Last year December, at the historic location of Amstel 178, Club YOLO opened its doors for the very first time. Gay News spoke with owners Valy Pintiuc and Jorge Pessanha about the past, success and future plans.
Amstel 178: the place on Amsterdam’s Amstel River where gay clubs had a presence for a long period of time. The location started as a gay club with Club Amstel, after which Club You II and Club Roque took over. For years, both were a household name and extremely popular. Before entering, you often had to queue. Once in, it was party time. After Club Roque was taken over, the location disappeared from the gay scene listing in Amsterdam for some years. Valy and Jorge restored the club to its former glory and brought back Club YOLO as the only gay club on the Amstel. At the moment, it is again possible to dance in the small hours of the morning at Amstel 178.
Valy and Jorge certainly are no strangers to Amsterdam’s night-life. As owners and managers of Cafe Amstel Fifty Four, Valy and Jorge have worked in the gay scene for years, getting fresh ideas. Together, they made a great success of Cafe Amstel Fifty Four. Legendary nights, such as “Drag Fever” and “Drag Night,” are known to many and have offered a stage to many a drag queen. Years ago, Valy and Jorge also started organizing the street parties on the Amstel during King’s Day and Gay Pride Amsterdam. Each year on the banks of the Amstel river, thousands of people celebrate and enjoy themselves to the fullest. To further expand their successful enterprise, they decided to open Club YOLO. On December 29, 2017, the club opened its doors. Valy and Jorge started an exciting new adventure, and now can be found four days a week at the new location.
Valy: “There was an opportunity to take over the club on Amstel 178. I didn’t hesitate for a moment and knew we could make a success of it and give the club back to the gay scene. For me, this was an important goal. I used to visit the Roque a lot, and had wonderful evenings there. I thought the Amstel lacked something for years, not having a gay club. We now try to organize different nights, and as the name suggests: ‘You Only Live Once,’ so we want to ensure that the public can get everything out of a night out, doing everything in our power with the team to achieve this. Everyone is welcome!”
Club YOLO offers a range of parties. There are House and Circuit dance evenings with resident DJs such as Divine, Sergio Tee, Rob Boskamp, Stennis, and Glaucio Duarte - Well-known names in the dance scene. They also organize “Scandal Ibiza” (deep & progressive music) with DJs Benjamin, Lady Deep and an international guest DJ. The night is complete with sexy performances.
Club YOLO also organizes “Latin Night,” hosted by drag queen La Lolly. This night is all about Latin music, dance and performances. There are also varying guest appearances for vocals.
In addition to the regular club nights, Club YOLO also hosts girl’s party RimSalaBim - MEIJT as of September 22. The immensely popular MEIJT started in Club YOLO with a private party. The party will now be held every two months. The next edition will be on November 24, 2018. MEIJT, known as the Gay-Quote Page of The Netherlands, offers a versatile evening with different DJs, door bitches and hysterical performances.
Jorge: “We try out different styles in Club YOLO, with something for everyone. We have hosted great events at Club YOLO during the Amsterdam Dance Event 2018. All upcoming events and specials will be announced via our social media in order for our visitors to keep up-to-date with our activities. We will continue to renew, and the upcoming months will see many exiting new nights and events. Keep an eye out for Club YOLO via social media and do not miss a thing!”
After a long period in which the Amstel was partially closed off, the renewed Amstel will be reopened in the beginning of November. Club YOLO will then be easily accessible again. Next year, King’s Day will again be celebrated exuberantly on the Amstel. Valy and Jorge will try to get the street party feeling to the Amstel at King’s Day!
Valy and Jorge do not rest on their laurels. In addition to Club YOLO, they also organize the annual main stage on Dam Square during Pride Amsterdam.
Valy: “2018 was a huge success for the main stage on Dam Square. This year, approximately 50,000 visitors enjoyed spectacular performances and DJ sets. It was very nice to see that our hard work was embraced by the visitors. It was a great event, and next year we will be back!”
Life, however, is not just about parties. Each year, Valy and Jorge and, if possible, in cooperation with friends and other bars along the Amstel River, organize the benefit “Samen Sterk Tegen Kanker” (Together Strong Against Cancer). “Samen Sterk Tegen Kanker” is now in its eleventh year during the month of December.
The purpose of the event is to raise funds for cancer patients forced to stay at the Antonie van Leeuwenhoek hospital in Amsterdam during the holidays. With the collection funds, gifts are bought, which are distributed to the patients annually during the holiday season. Anyone can contribute to this. On December 16, 2018, the annual benefit will take place at Club YOLO. Everyone is welcome.
On December 29, 2018, Club YOLO will celebrate its first anniversary. For this party weekend, they will pull out all the stops. Valy and Jorge hope to welcome all of you!
