As summer truly is over now, and the classes and endlessly long working days are awaiting us, it is time for the “changing of the guard” at GLBTQ+ student association A.S.V.Gay. Board of Directors #9 will take over from Board #8 at our general members meeting on October 2.
Our board consists of six members: Bram the Vice-Chairman, Boukje at Internal Affairs, Jeffrey the Secretary, Liselot the Treasurer, Niek at External Affairs, and myself, the Chairwoman. We will take over the tasks of the board and keep you informed about developments in our administration and at A.S.V.Gay. As we want to give everyone a chance to showcase their perspective, the writers of the columns will alternate as to get better acquainted with all the members of the board.
However, I do need a moment to look back on the summer. In addition to a great Canal Parade with our very own boat, we also organized a symposium on the theme “Tolerance” - discussing false tolerance in the Dutch GLBTQ+ community. Furthermore, we had a recycling workshop in which we learned how to make our own sex toys from old bicycle tires. Very handy! And of course, we had our own Student Pride Party, focusing on all the GLBTQ+ students attending the Pride Week in our beautiful Amsterdam.
As September is drawing to a close, the introduction period for new members is now behind us. In addition to a number of get-togethers that were open to the public, some activities were organized in order for new members to get to know each other, the association and gay Amsterdam. The “Ontrozing” introduction weekend is still on the agenda. It is a playful gay version of the classic “hazing” with a weekend in a hut on the moors, with games and many more fun activities.
After the introduction period, “normal” life will start again, with our weekly get-togethers on Wednesday in the bar Amstel54, theme parties and other fun activities. We hope we will be seeing as many of our new members as possible there! If you are still in doubt about joining us or would just like to drop by, please do not hesitate to visit us on Wednesday evening.
Even though September has already started, autumn and the cold winter days are coming, and the lazy summer days are now a thing of the past, we certainly are looking forward to the new year! We want to make a great year of it with our new board and wish you the same!
