Agreements between action group PrEPnu and the Amsterdam pharmacist Hans Smit have resulted in a second hefty price reduction for the HIV prevention pill PrEP. The price of generic PrEP has now dropped from EUR 50 to EURO 39.
Both parties have announced this news on the last day of the World Aids Conference AIDS2018, which took place in Amsterdam. The theme of this biennial conference was: Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges.
Last year, through mediation by PrEPnu and Hans Smit, the first generic variant of PrEP was available in Dutch pharmacies for EUR 99.50. Until then, the brand name Truvada was the only available drug for HIV prophylaxis and cost around EUR 600 a month.
"We fully support PrEPnu's mission," says Hans Smit of the DC Apotheek Valeriusplein. “Just like PrEPnu, we want to make PrEP available to anyone who needs it.” This is by no means the case now. Even though the price has dropped to about EUR 55 after last year's negotiations, it is still too expensive for many people.
PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis, taking a protective pill prior to possible exposure to HIV. It consists of the preventive use of the HIV inhibitors Emtricitabine / Tenofovir (brand name Truvada). With proper use, the risk of contracting HIV almost completely disappears.
Here in the Netherlands, approximately 800 people still contract HIV on a yearly basis. Although an HIV infection can be treated, prevention of new infections remains of great importance. The availability of PrEP is therefore a crucial addition to existing preventative measures.
PrEP can now be bought from DC Apotheek, Valeriusplein in Amsterdam with a prescription from a GP or specialist for EUR 39 per month. With a prescription, the pharmacy can also send it to other parts of the Netherlands. Naturally, the PrEP guidelines must be observed, which means that the person needs to have been tested in advance for HIV, hepatitis B and C, STDs and kidney function. Blood and urine tests are to be repeated every three months.
