Streetheart, the quirky new GLBTQI festival on the Kerkstaat, returns for its second edition on the second Saturday of September.
A love baby of Gala Foundation, ChUrch and the Kerkstraat business association, it’s aim is to get queer visibility back onto the city’s first gay street.
From the 1950s, the Kerkstraat was the gay street of Holland with bars, clubs and the night sauna. Those days are long gone but there are still four remaining gay businesses on the street.
It’s important to remain visible throughout the year - outside of Amsterdam Pride, there are no public GLBT events in the city. This festival aims to fill that gap. It will give a taste of the queer scene but it is also (straight) family and kid friendly too. So lots of pink poodles and just a touch of fetish!
In keeping with the gender fluid nature of the event, the dress code is pink, blue and white, the colors of the transgender flag. There will be a small clothing corner where visitors can slip on a frock and heels or a fake mustache. And don’t miss the “Gender Fluid Streetheart” award for the best costume from a star-studded jury!
When the street closes at 9 p.m. the party carries on till late inside ChUrch itself - expect it to get a little raunchier after the kids have gone to bed!
Streetheart Festival Saturday, September 8, 2018, 13:00 till 21:00 free entry, 21:00 till late in ChUrch, entrance: € 12.50, Kerkstraat 52 (near corner Leidsestraat), 1017 GM Amsterdam
