As every year, Amsterdam Pride is extremely proud of their ambassadors. This year's theme could not have suited them better, as each and every one of them have given their all for the LGBTI community. Jennifer Hopelezz.
“Waiting even one more day is irresponsible”
With Jennifer Hopelezz (Richard Keldoulis), every day is a party. She, however, is so much more than that - with heart and soul she conveys a message. Her strength lies in the combination of drag and politics, with one clear message: “I fight for everything that has to do with gay sex.”
Jennifer (38) was born ‘Down under’ in Australia. In the Netherlands, she has her coming-out as Jennifer Hopelezz. She has now even performed at the world-famous Mardi Gras in Sydney.
At first, these high heels felt a bit awkward, but I soon got the hang of it. Jennifer has a huge following. “In Australia, it is quite normal to see men with beards in Drag” Richard can relate to Jennifer's character and type.
“She is a businesswoman, single mother, activist and sports fanatic.” It should not come as a surprise that she was at the cradle of the Drag Queen Olympics. It was and is a resounding success. Many a drag queen has now sprinted around the Westerkerk in stiletto heels.
“Don't forget the handbag toss and bitch-volleyball.”
Around the turn of the century, Jennifer came to the Netherlands because of its sexual freedom. She never regretted it. “Here, anything goes.” Jennifer is no stranger to political activism. “When you are dressed up, you stand out to get your message across and into the spotlight.”
For instance, she has been working for years to get PreP reimbursed by health insurance companies. “I get angry and sad that it is taking so long. Waiting even one more day is simply irresponsible.” The meaning of sex should not be underestimated. “It is a positive thing if you do it in a safe and responsible way.”
She doesn't have to think long to decide on her great hero. That is unmistakably Fabiola. “She was so much herself as a drag queen. She was not always taken seriously, but she was noticed. She fought for people without a voice.”
As ambassador, Jennifer is committed to promoting sex. “We do not exist without sex.” Through her performances, sharp voice and charisma, Jennifer will send a strong signal.
She continues to fight for an open society and free sex.
