Sexual activity engaged in while under the influence of stimulant drugs(chem sex) is gaining more and more ground in some of the gay scene now the price of crystal meth is falling. This is accompanied by an increase in STDs, the GGD concludes.

The question is whether we are dealing with the onset of an epidemic comparable to London and Manchester," researcher Henry de Vries of the Municipal Health Service (GGD) and the AMC Hospital notes. "In the UK, but also in the US, chem sex is common among male homosexuals."

Chem sex is the collective term for sex under the influence of certain drugs, such as GHB, mephedrone (also known as 'meow meow') and crystal meth ('tina'). These are used separately or in combination.

Under the influence of drugs, sex can be experienced more intensely. "People get hornier, sex lasts longer, and the orgasm is better," Leon Knoops of Mainline, an organization for the health of drug users, says. Knoops has been researching the chem sex scene since 2012. How many people are engaged in chem sex is unknown. Not much scientific research has been done on this phenomenon.

Amsterdam is ranked fourth in European cities with the most practitioners, behind Brighton, Manchester and London, the 2016 survey of 175,000 users of dating sites for gay people concludes.

In a recent study, the GGD concludes that 29 percent of Amsterdam gay men had chem sex in the past six months through the dating app Grindr. Among gay men who visited the STD clinic of the GGD last year, this was 17 percent.

A 2016 survey of 175,000 homosexual dating site users ranked the European cities with the most occurrences of chem sex. The survey question was who had taken drugs for sexual purposes in the previous 4 weeks. The results:

 1. Brighton (16.3 %)
 2. Manchester (15.5 %)
 3. London (13.2 %)
 4. Amsterdam (11.2%)
 5. Barcelona (7.9 %)
 6. Zurich (7%)
 7. Berlin (5.3 %)
