The parliament of the Dutch county Limburg has declared the province a Rainbow Province. A Rainbow Province is a county that will implement policy to advance the safety and rights of the LGBTI community.
In a motion that was widely carried (only the PVV voted against) and submitted in the State Meeting of early November, the Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD) requested an active county-wide LGBTI policy and cooperation with civil society organizations to join other Dutch provinces in the Rainbow Project. COC Limburg is thrilled with this decision.
The PvdD motion argued that Limburg should stimulate social acceptance, greater security, and equal treatment of LGBTIs. COC Limburg is convinced that this result will make its cooperation with the Province of Limburg stronger in the future.
“Wonderful news, of course, but it just a formality, as Limburg has been a Rainbow Province in spirit for a long time,” President Odin Westen of COC Limburg states. “Consequently, with the commitment to the Social Agenda Limburg, COC Limburg will be recognized as a social organization. With that, COC Limburg is the only COC branch in the Netherlands that is supported by the Province.”
COC Limburg has already worked with the province, municipalities and civil society organizations intensively. One great result of this collaboration is the ‘diversity pact’. Its purpose is to provide the municipal political parties with assistance to include diversity policy in their political programs for the municipal elections of 2018. With this pact, COC Limburg, together with twelve other civil society organizations, is fighting for an inclusive society. In the coming months, debates on this theme will be organised with seven municipalities in Limburg.
Knowledge, Skills and Learning is implemented on a wider scale in secondary education by 'Safe School Limburg,’ a project of COC Limburg. Its purpose is to promote the social security of LGBTI students and staff in secondary education in Limburg. Odin Westen: “Its strength lies in the way these sessions are given. The lessons are tailored to the level of the students”.
Limburg will become the fifth Rainbow Province after Drenthe, Gelderland, Groningen, and Flevoland.
