Each month, Jurandy Lucas (Creative Producer of Backdoor Amsterdam) and Dave Koster (photographer) report on GLBT+ parties and other events in and outside of Amsterdam. This month, they travelled to Rotterdam for Rotterdam Pride 2017 to report on the Backdoor Party, the Pride Walk, and the Cocktail Fest. Once back in the capital, we just had to visit the party Mega Flikker.
September 22, De Unie Rotterdam. The production team of Backdoor Amsterdam had moved to De Unie Rotterdam for the opening party of Rotterdam Pride. What a great city Rotterdam is! Ultramodern with open-minded and super friendly people! We danced till five o’clock in the morning on music from international DJs Max del Principe, Glaucio Duarte, and Diego Summers.
The first thing we noticed in Rotterdam was the city’s unique difference in the party scene compared to Amsterdam’s scene. Where Amsterdam is dominated by the rough “circuit” parties with visitors who will lose their sweaty shirts in no time, the Rotterdammers love fun, laughter and merry parties.
It should be clear by now that we truly enjoyed the opening party of Rotterdam Pride!
The Backdoor crew returns to Amsterdam on January 27 for their third anniversary. Naturally, this will be a grand affair. Regularly check the website for more information.
September 23, Centre of Rotterdam. After sleeping for a few hours, we were on our way again. This time to the impressive Erasmus Bridge and the beginning of the Rotterdam Pride Walk. The sun was shining, and it promised to be a lovely day! People of all ages were participating in the Pride Walk, including both the right-wing and left-wing radicals. You can probably guess what happened next.
Before the Walk had even started, things escalated. The Pride Walk is intended as an example of inclusivity and acceptance within the GLBT+ community, but the left and right-wing radicals decided to exploit the Pride Walk for their own purposes. Following a bizarre decision made by the organizers, the right-wing group was to walk in front of the Walk.
The left radicals were not happy, and the two groups clashed. Awkward! Gay people fighting! Fortunately, the vast majority was protected from the small riot by the police, who separated the two groups in order for the Walk to continue in silence, and show the city of Rotterdam our happy message of inclusivity
By the time our dignity was intact again, we arrived at the Schouwburgplein for the Pride Festival, organized by Totally Events. After a couple of hours of partying, tired, but satisfied, we went home for a power nap, as our next stop that evening would be the Cocktail Fest! www.rotterdam-pride.com
September 23, Maassilo Rotterdam. What a great party the second edition of Cocktail Fest was. Cocktail Fest was the main party of Rotterdam Pride and held at the immensely large Maassilo complex. Cocktail combines existing gay events, and this combination of events is a relatively new concept in the Netherlands.
It is not the first time that party organizers join forces to a dynamic new kind of party, but in the Maassilo there was room for everyone: from sexy people, leather boys and hunks, to drags, twinks, funky and freaky. The main hall was full of party-goers who came for the beats of Circuit, WTF and IT’s Party, among others. The choice to bring them together in one room was at the expense of the smaller venues that had generated less momentum. Nevertheless, our compliments to the organization. The music was great, and the atmosphere typically of that of Rotterdam. We are looking forward to the third edition of the Cocktail Fest. www.cocktail-fest.com
30 September, Marktkantine Amsterdam. For those who are in the dark: a “flikker” is a faggot and that’s a gay man. Especially a proud one. Perhaps you are a “flikker”? But that aside, we are very proud of drag queen Snorella WC. We were her guests at her Mega Flikker party in Marktkantine, Amsterdam. Mega Flikker is the big sister of the Flikker party, the gay and open-minded party in OT301.
This time, the theme was Bollywood. Or something like that. Because you never know with Snorella WC. She’s very mysterious! It may have been a homage to ancient India, but one thing was certain: this was a fun, freaky and exuberant night out.
The DJ line-up was sublime, with Maxime Duval, Valentijn de Hingh, and Larry Tee. The crowd was a nice mixture of young and old, from frat boys and sexy hunks, to butch girls and petit queens. All original and straight from art academy by the looks of it. A breath of fresh air for Saturday night! Unfortunately, Mega Flikker is not every Saturday night. We can’t wait for the next edition! www.facebook.com/flikker.amsterdam
