Out & About: Oh, Oh, Oh Did We Party!

by Jurandy Lucas in Nightlife & Reports , 31 October 2017

Each month, Jurandy Lucas (creative producer of Backdoor Amsterdam) and Dave Koster (photographer) report on queer parties and other events in and outside of Amsterdam. This month, the photo exhibition “Kings & Queens,” Disco Total, the Streetheart Festival, and of course Backdoor.

Kings & Queens

Following the idea of Micha Schneiderberg alias Snorella WC and photographer Léon Hendrickx, this great photo exhibition takes you on a journey of the man and his inner queen. What started as a small-scale photo project in Amsterdam, has led to this creative duo travelling several European cities to get the most significant drag artists in front of the camera.

Leon shows himself to be a masterful photographer. With a touch of Photoshop to make the illusion real, we enter into the world of men with their alter ego: their drag persona. Our compliments!

Disco Total

On Friday, September 8, we were guests at the Disco Total party of singer and artiste Maxime Duvall in Club Claire on Rembrandtplein. It was a smashing hit. The Italo disco mix by DJs Aroy Dee and Dupe was to us a totally new music style. Romantic 1970s disco in a modern techno mix.

Maxime herself sang live on stage with a fashion show in the background. The dance floor was packed with young, open-minded visitors. The atmosphere was extremely friendly, with men and women, straight, gay, and everything in between. It is obvious that circuit parties have a solid competitor in Italo Elite. Experience this new party scene for yourself.

Streetheart Festival

The Kerkstraat is back! That is the conclusion we reached after visiting the “StreetHeart Festival” on the Amsterdam Kerkstraat, which took place for the very first time on Saturday, September 9. It was a kind of mini gay pride in a mini gay street.

The Kerkstraat used to be the gay street of Amsterdam for many gays. Few of our generation have not visited Europe’s most exciting night sauna, located on the Kerkstraat.

After this night sauna closed in the year 2000, two successful clubs, Church and Spijker, held the torch high for visitors who wanted a change from the bars on Reguliersdwarsstraat.

This new street party by Jennifer Hopelezz and Stichting Gala was a wonderful event. I’ll certainly be there next year!

Backdoor® Summer Closing Party

What is it about summer, that it’s over before you know it? I guess “Time flies, when you’re having sun.” But one thing was certain, Backdoor® closed the summer of 2017 in style. It was an extravagant event with freaky sexy entertainment led by stylist Huub Lammens.

And appropriately, resident DJ Diego Summers closed the summer season with a hot set.
