COC Netherlands is extremely concerned about the forthcoming appointment of Pete Hoekstra by President Donald Trump as US ambassador to the Netherlands. Hoekstra is known for his anti-gay views.
They have brought their concerns to the attention of Minister Bert Koenders (Foreign Affairs) with the request to relay these concerns to the US government.
Pete Hoekstra, born in Groningen, was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1993 to 2011 on behalf of a district in his home state Michigan. As a delegate, Hoekstra was a fierce opponent of equal rights for gays. He continuously opposed gay marriage, adoption rights for same-sex couples, and non-discrimination legislation based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Hoekstra was also one of the petitioners of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, a bill to revise the US Constitution and make it impossible for individual states to sanction same-sex marriages.
COC spokesperson Philip Tijsma: "Pete Hoekstra’s anti-gay are in direct contradiction with the Dutch policy of national and international promotion of social acceptance and equality for gays.” “As such, we do not deem it respectful to send someone who holds such views as an ambassador to our country.”
