Security Council Hearing on Anti LGBT Violence by IS

Last August, the US and Chile have organised a hearing for the members of the Security Council of the United Nations on the violence against and the executions of LGBTs (or those who are mistaken for them) by Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

The invitation to the hearing stated that Islamic State (IS) is executing men for homosexual acts by pushing them from high buildings. At least eight of such executions were put on the Internet by IS.

The Security Council was given information on the prosecution of, the violence against and execution of Iraqi and Syrian victims by Jessica Stern, President of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission.

The hearing was presided over by Samantha Power, the American ambassador at the UN, and Cristian Barros Melet, the Chilean UN ambassador. All members of the Security Council were invited to the hearing, but attendance of these informal meetings is not obligatory.

It was a historical hearing, as it was the first time the Security Council in New York ever held a meeting on an LGBT issue.

The UN Human Rights Council in Geneva has been organising meetings with some regularity that are specifically meant to improve LGBT rights, partly because of the efforts of COC Netherlands. COC Netherlands has used its observer status at the UN to systematically draw attention to LGBT rights in all activities of the United Nations, and will continue to do so.
