The gay guys are improving

Gay men, as well as bisexual men, get tested on HIV more often than before. Younger men test more often than older men, so infections are detected in earlier stages. The number of newly registered HIV diagnoses in this group is no longer going up. These are the main results of the Schorer Monitor 2011, an annual research of health, welfare and sexuality amongst gay and bisexual men in The Netherlands, and the last report of the HIV Monitor Foundation (SHM).

The SHM says they can’t detect a continuing rise in the number of new registered HIV infections amongst gay and bisexual men. In 2009 as well as 2010 there were about 750 new cases. The Schorer Monitor reports a stabilization in sexually risky behavior with casual partners: a little over a third of gay and bisexual men reported to have had incidental unsafe sex in the last six months.

In previous years these incidents increased steadily.

There also seems to be an improvement in testing behavior of gay and bisexual men. According to Schorer the percentage of men that were tested on HIV had increased to 78%.

Men under 26 had gotten tested more recently than the older men. This is why infections get detected earlier than before: the SHM reports that half of the young guys that test positively had a recent infection, while this was in only a quarter of the time the case amongst guys over 55-years old.

Wim Zuilhof (senior Prevention officer with Schorer) ‘This means that Schorer advises to not only aim the testing policies on young gay and bisexual men, but also on middle-aged and elderly men. We find that regular testing of these groups is still very necessary.’
