Pink Point Opens Franchise in Buenos Aires

Pink Point, the gay and lesbian information kiosk at the Homomonument that has been a fixture in Amsterdam for more than a decade, has opened a new franchise in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Pink Point Buenos Aires, based in a busy shopping district in the center of the city, opened its doors earlier this year. The founder is expat Dutchman Erik Hovenga Diaz: “I was in Amsterdam for the Gay Games in 1998 and followed closely the start of Pink Point there.

The gay scene in Buenos Aires is much more spread out than in Amsterdam, there isn’t one particular gay street or district. Tourists often have no idea where they should go - there are gay maps here but nothing like Gay News. I thought it was important to bundle all this information under one roof.”

Hovenga Diaz, who has a background in tourism as a tour group leader, left Holland in 1988 and worked abroad until he moved to Argentina in 2004.

One of the specialties of Pink Point Buenos Aires is offering gay excursions and tours - like the half-day Gay City Tour, Tigre-delta tour, Tango shows, as well as organizing “Weekend Clubs” for groups of 10-20 men.

With the opening of marriage to gays and lesbians in Argentina earlier this year, there’s been a surge of interest in Buenos Aires as a gay holiday destination.

And of course with Princess Maxima hailing from Argentina, and the airing of the popular Dutch drama series “Julia’s Tango,” there has a been a boom in tourism from Holland in particular.

As in Amsterdam, one of the aims of Pink Point Buenos Aires is to increase gay visibility. “Gays and lesbians have fought hard for their rights across the globe and in Argentina,” says Hovenga. “We want to celebrate Argentina’s new gay marriage law by making Buenos Aires a completely open gay-travel city. This is something we really believe in and think can be a huge success!”

In addition to Buenos Aires, Barcelona has also recently open a Pink Point - at the moment only as an internet site - so it looks like Pink Point is on its way to becoming a truly global gay brand.
